Manipur, my lovely state I have been talking about, is slowly
nurturing its budding fashion designers; who are adding elements of
Manipuri style, in the form of its designs, fabrics, patterns and the
Manipuri spirit. The Manipuri fashion scene has been long unexplored,
obscure, exotic and outlandish to the outside world. But not for long I
hope!
Here, I share some of my outfit picks from the Manipuri fashion weeks of this year and the last.

The
phanek(a wrap tied around the waist or chest) and the phi(a silk stole
here) are the basic pieces of a Manipuri outfit. Here's an elegant take
on them-paired with exquisite traditional jewellery, perfect for an
evening occasion!

A
simple top and wrap-timeless Manipuri 'leishabi' style. A 'leishabi' is
a young unmarried Manipuri woman. Married women would usually add a
stole(phi) to the outfit.

A
lovely dress made with a 'moirang phee' pattern. A 'moirang phee' or
'rani phee' is a delicate silk stole embroidered with silk. Typical
motifs include bunches of flowers and the trademark 'temple border'
design

The
model holds a 'phiruk'. A cane basket used for religious and ceremonial
purposes as well as for storage of feast food items. White always
symbolizes purity and elegance!
